The Vocabulary of Gen Z

Gen Z Lingo is forever changing and adapting and unless you are a social media savant, chances are you are unfamiliar with a few of the phrases that are commented on posts, hashtagged on pictures, or overheard in the hallways of your campus. Have your students teach you how to appropriately weave Gen Z Lingo into your own lexicon. Apply the Frayer Model to the language of their generation!

This resource highlights 25 of the most popular phrases currently circulating the internet (and includes a cheat sheet for teachers complete with definitions and examples of each).

For this assignment, students will work together to define and analyze these terms. Students will use the Frayer Model to take note of the nuances and complexities of meaning that surround the usage of these phrases in real life.

I will admit, I had a little too much fun coming up with these examples. The Frayer Model proves to be the perfect tool to tackle these “slang” terms and their meanings. It truly isn’t enough to simply know what these words mean when you hear them. Thankfully, the Frayer Model forces students to think about everything that goes beyond the definition. If students can apply the Frayer Model to these words,  you will be setting a foundation for the rest of the year. Students will have a better understanding of what you’re looking for when you ask them to analyze the words and concepts you will be covering in your class.

Spread the Word Campaign

Every word on the Gen Z Lingo list has started with a single use. One person said it, others repeated it, and through the power of social media and the trend-setting culture of Gen Z, it caught on. So who’s to say the students in your class can’t start the next viral phrase? 

This optional extension activity allows students to have fun with language. Students will use the Frayer Model to define a made-up word or phrase and provide examples of how their fellow classmates should use it. Not only will students be having fun, but they will further cement their knowledge and application of the Frayer Model.
